Resources for Organizations
2009 Grant Funds

Through a network of seven organizations, the Corporation for National and Community Service each year makes available approximately $700,000 to nonprofit groups to organize and implement King Day service projects. Listed below are the names of the organizations and brief descriptions of the scope of their grant.

• The Points of Light Institute will receive $150,000 to fund sub-grant projects focused on increasing support for youth in disadvantaged circumstances by combining with their Hands on Schools, Neighboring Initiative, Kids Care Clubs, and Earned Income Tax Credit sites.

• The Corps Network will receive $100,000 to support sub-grantees and affiliates, sustaining their broader work by expanding outreach and community presence and capitalizing on the King Day of Service as a time to recruit new partners and volunteers for that day and for activities throughout the year.

• The North Carolina Campus Compact will receive $100,000 to engage students in project planning, connect them with local communities, and expand the MLK Day of Service by enhancing the students’ sense of responsibility, citizenship, leadership, and awareness, while reinvigorating higher education’s concern for improving the quality of life.

• Youth Service America will receive $100,000 to engage up to 15 lead agencies in YSA’s Semester of Service, which is designed to engage 25,000 students between the ages of 5 and 25 to serve at least 70 hours during the school semester. These lead agencies will also be invited to participate in YSA’s Global Youth Service Day training institute to prepare for Semester of Service activities.

• Service for Peace will receive $97,500 to mobilize volunteers from new populations and organizations that have not previously served on the King Holiday. To accomplish this, they have established a “40 Days of Peace” program that will leverage the involvement of new partners.

• Campus Kitchen will receive $77,500 to bring college students and the community together to address issues surrounding hunger by engaging youth in leading hunger relief programs to share on-campus kitchen space, recover unused food from campus cafeterias, and deliver meals to low-income neighborhoods.

• The National Alliance of Faith and Justice will receive $75,000 to fund sub-grantees that support efforts to engage youth in service by giving them the opportunity to apply the teachings of non-violent social change to issues in the communities and schools.

Global Youth Service Day -- 2009 State Farm Funding

State Farm® Good Neighbor Service-Learning grants (US and Canadian Applicants)
With generous support from the State Farm Companies Foundation, Youth Service America is offering the annual State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grant for youth-led community improvement projects across the United States and Canada (Alberta, Ontario, and New Brunswick provinces only). These grants of up to $1,000 support teachers and service-learning coordinators in engaging students (ages 5-25) to implement service-learning projects for Global Youth Service Day, April 24-26, 2009. We encourage semester-long projects that are launched on Martin Luther King Day on January 19, 2009 and extend through Global Youth Service Day. Questions? Donation and Grant Eligibility Guidelines

In keeping with Costco Wholesale’s giving guidelines our warehouses and regional offices specifically support programs focusing on children, education and health and human services. We would like to respond favorably to all requests however the needs are far greater than our allocated resources. Therefore it is not possible for us to accommodate all requests.
Costco Warehouse Donations
For local organizations and groups, which focus on children, education or health and human services, provide your local Costco Warehouse Manager with a copy of your IRS tax letter with your 501 (c) (3) status and a written request on your organizations letterhead. To determine your closest warehouse click here.
Regional Office Donations
For donations which impact a broader community or region, focusing on children, education or health and human services provide the regional office with a copy of your IRS tax letter noting your 501 (c) (3) status and a written request on your organizations letterhead.
Qualifying for a Grant
We specifically focus on programs supporting children, education and health and human services. The United Way, Children’s Hospital and the Red Cross are a major focus in our charitable giving. Costco Wholesale is committed to supporting charitable and community activities in the markets where we do business.
We do not fund direct aid to the following:
• Individuals
• Capital campaigns or building construction projects
• Political organizations
• Religious organizations for religious purposes
• Symposiums, conferences or professional association meetings or conventions
• Salaries
• Governmental agencies
• Athletic teams or events
• Animal related programs, including shelters
• Merchandise for auction
Grants
Our Charitable Contributions Committee is charged with overseeing our charitable giving and encouraging decentralization of charitable giving so that the greatest impact is where Costco’s employees and members live and work. Only 501(c) (3) nonprofit organizations, which meet our giving guidelines and focus areas, are considered. See FAQ’s and Grant Application for specific details and required documents to be considered for review.
A lead time of at least 3 months, prior to your program or event, will allow us to give timely consideration to your request.
