Hey ACMAC, I just happened to be bored at work and decided to check out the wiki to see what was new. As a past Coordinator and newsletter editor, I want to say GREAT JOB! Everything looks awesome. I love the new pages and info, this site is really becoming a comprehensive resource for AmeriCorps memebers. The newsletters look really good too, I'm impressed with how many articles you've been able to publish. Keep it up! :)

Forum category: AmeriCorps Discussion / General Discussion
Forum thread: Great Job ACMAC

I had one more group of items to add to the ACMAC wiki, which I will not be able to accomplish. (You can see my entries on the wiki as "Evanston.") Those items relate to the recurring problems members have with local officials regarding so-called benefits, such as food stamps, public assistance, housing, etc. I planned to post official information on the wiki. I heard recently that VISTAs get this info as part of orientation. Unfortunately, AmeriCorps State members are lucky if they do. The State Commission does not maintain such information on its web site. … so, the wiki should.

This task should be taken up by the Ambassador Committee.

Forum category: AmeriCorps Discussion / General Discussion
Forum thread: Member Benefits

Dear Program Director:

I am writing as a member of the AmeriCorps Member Advisory Council (ACMAC). One of our tasks is to help members meet and work together in service events in their communities. Some AmeriCorps members have succeeded in finding other members in their community for service events. However, many need some help to do that, which leads to our request.

ACMAC will send a regular email to you, asking for proposed service events during the next month. This is the first such e-mail. We are requesting the typical who, what and where questions: Who is the contact, what is the event and where is it (town)? April has several possible service days, including Global Youth Service Days, April 24-29, 2009, among many other recognized national events.

We will post your response on our wiki site for AmeriCorps members to access. If you have not visited our site, you can get there through this url: http://acmac.wikidot.com/

Though April is fast approaching, please try to send your response by March 31.

Thank you for helping us assist your members.

Bob Springer

Forum category: AmeriCorps Discussion / General Discussion
Forum thread: Service Day events across Montana

Hey, Jordan created a Fundraising page and I just added it to the side panel. You should be able to click on it there now and add all of your information to the page. We can also set up a link from the Service Days page so people wanting to know about how to raise funds for them can go to the fundraising page. Looks like you have some great info, thanks for sharing! Go ahead and put it on the new page.

- Rebecca

Forum category: AmeriCorps Discussion / General Discussion
Forum thread: Fundraising

I'm a bit confused about this. Do you plan to keep donations and fundraising under resources? I understood this would be a "go to" category. Anyway, I have 2 different sets of material to add. One set is just funding linked to our service days, the other is more general funding and donations available in our communities. I think the possibility of a mini grant belongs in the first set. What follows are two sets of examples. (I have more for each.) The first examples are for service days; the second, include some examples of funding from local sources.

Example 1. (For MLK Day)

Through a network of seven organizations, the Corporation for National and Community Service each year makes available approximately $700,000 to nonprofit groups to organize and implement King Day service projects. Listed below are the names of the organizations and brief descriptions of the scope of their grant.

* The Points of Light Institute will receive $150,000 to fund sub-grant projects focused on increasing support for youth in disadvantaged circumstances by combining with their Hands on Schools, Neighboring Initiative, Kids Care Clubs, and Earned Income Tax Credit sites.

o Applications are currently available at http://www.pointsoflight.org/programs/seasons/mlkd and are due by 5:00pm local time on Wednesday, October 8, 2008. Please direct all inquiries to gro.thgilfostniop|tnargKLM#gro.thgilfostniop|tnargKLM.

* The Corps Network will receive $100,000 to support sub-grantees and affiliates, sustaining their broader work by expanding outreach and community presence and capitalizing on the King Day of Service as a time to recruit new partners and volunteers for that day and for activities throughout the year.

o Applications are currently available at http://www.corpsnetwork.org/MLKDayofService.asp and are due by 5:00pm EST on Tuesday, September 23, 2008. Please direct all inquiries to Tanya M. Simpson at gro.krowtensproc|nospmist#gro.krowtensproc|nospmist.

* The North Carolina Campus Compact will receive $100,000 to engage students in project planning, connect them with local communities, and expand the MLK Day of Service by enhancing the students’ sense of responsibility, citizenship, leadership, and awareness, while reinvigorating higher education’s concern for improving the quality of life.

o Applications for out-of-network RFP are due September 15. Please direct all inquiries to Leslie A. Garvin, MSW at ude.nole|nivragl#ude.nole|nivragl.

* Youth Service America will receive $100,000 to engage up to 15 lead agencies in YSA’s Semester of Service, which is designed to engage 25,000 students between the ages of 5 and 25 to serve at least 70 hours during the school semester. To accomplish this, they have established a “40 Days of Peace” program that will leverage the involvement of new partners.

o Request for Proposals (RFP) for the 2009 Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and 40 Days of Peace are due 5PM EST, Friday, September 5, 2008. Please direct all inquiries to Tony Devine at gro.ecaeprofecivres|enivedt#gro.ecaeprofecivres|enivedt or (203) 610-6745. For more information, please click here.

* Campus Kitchen will receive $77,500 to bring college students and the community together to address issues surrounding hunger by engaging youth in leading hunger relief programs to share on-campus kitchen space, recover unused food from campus cafeterias, and deliver meals to low-income neighborhoods.

o Applications for out-of-network RFP are due September 1. Please direct all inquiries to Maureen Roche at gro.snehctiksupmac|ehcorm#gro.snehctiksupmac|ehcorm.

* The National Alliance of Faith and Justice will receive $75,000 to fund sub-grantees that support efforts to engage youth in service by giving them the opportunity to apply the teachings of non-violent social change to issues in the communities and schools.

o Applications for out-of-network RFP are accepted September 1 - October 1.
Our recent success in Missoula's Make a Difference Day included some small scale fundraising, and there are a couple of national organizations offering funds for MLK and Global Youth Service week. Perhaps we should link those fund sources on the wiki. For example, COSTCO store managers have discretionary funds for local non-profits and Disney offers small grants for Global Youth Services week. I have collected a few of the links for these that could be a start.

Forum category: AmeriCorps Discussion / General Discussion
Forum thread: Fundraising

Hi Kay,

Yeah, I guess we're not checking the forum as often as we should. We selected new members mid-August so we're planning for the retreat now. I don't think we ever got an application from Jenna, though.

Forum category: AmeriCorps Discussion / General Discussion
Forum thread: New ACMAC members?

Hi Jordan and Rebecca,
Have you all brought the new members on board yet? There is a new VISTA in Missoula that is interested in joining you all. Her name is Jenna Finney. You might have an application from her, but if not just send me a note and I'll get you her contact information. I'm looking forward to seeing you all at BEC.
Kay

Forum category: AmeriCorps Discussion / General Discussion
Forum thread: New ACMAC members?

Hi all ACMACers!
As the MTCC VISTA Leader I'm starting a new focus on carpooling for AmeriCorps members. Especially when we are all going to the same place there is no need to travel alone in a vehicle. Is anyone on ACMAC down with this? Can I post carpool information for you all and AmeriCorps members on your WIKI? Also, how is everyone doing? Who are the new members?
Jordan,
I really think if ACMAC could compile the new statewide contact list of members and send it out it would be a lot more effective than having individual members contact each project. This could be a great service.
I recommend contacting each of the Project Directors and asking for lists. That way you'll also have they'll also be informed about what you're working on.

I compiled a list a while ago for the ACMAC newsletter, but looking at it now, I realize it's already obsolete.

Forum category: AmeriCorps Discussion / Help/Questions
Forum thread: Missoula Area Members
