Office for Civic Engagement to Sponsor Make a Difference Day 2007

UM Students to Participate in National Service Day at Poverello Center on October 27th

On Saturday, October 27th, the Office for Civic Engagement (OCE) will sponsor Raise Spirits and Help Fright Poverty, as a part of the annual Make a Difference Day (MaDD) project. This service project will take place at the Poverello Center homeless shelter and soup kitchen, located at 535 Ryman Street from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., and at the Joseph Residence transitional housing facility located at 2405 Mcintosh Loop from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The first event of the day, held at the Poverello Center, will be a “Spooky Meal” prepared and served by UM student volunteers; they will also decorate the center in order to create a festive and enjoyable atmosphere for the lunchtime visitors. The second event will take place at the Joseph Residence and will be a Halloween costume-making event, at which time UM student volunteers will help resident children construct homemade costumes. The project will help connect UM students and community members in a fun and festive event that will help meet some of the needs of Missoula’s low-income residents.

For more than eight years, the OCE has sponsored projects for Make a Difference Day, the largest national day of service. In the past, the OCE has worked with a number of local organizations on projects that have included garden clean-ups, playground construction, warm-weather clothing drives, food collection drives, homeless shelter maintenance and meal preparation. Make a Difference Day was founded by USA Weekend Magazine, and through various local MaDD projects, millions of people across the nation have participated in this national service day.
